Gender Care Letters

We should all be allowed to make decisions about our bodies without needing permission or proof. While gatekeeping practices exist, I am grateful to be able to offer letters of support for access to gender-affirming medical care. I follow the informed consent model, which seeks to acknowledge and support each person’s autonomy in making decisions about their health and medical care.

What can I expect?

Letters of support for gender affirming medical care typically take one 45-minute session in order to ethically gather the information that needs to be in your letter. During these sessions, I will ask about your gender journey more broadly as well as the information required based on the WPATH Standards of Care (see below). There is no right or wrong way to do gender and I have no interest in deciding whether you are “trans enough” for medical care.

What is required to be included in my letter based on the WPATH Standards of Care?

  • Your legal name, date of birth, and type of medical intervention you are pursuing

  • Your pronouns, gender identity, and identified (chosen) name

  • Your experience of gender dysphoria (feeling different than gender assigned at birth, wanting to appear or be treated different than gender assigned at birth, and/or discomfort or desires relating to sex characteristics)

  • Any mental health diagnoses and treatments you are currently receiving

  • Your understanding of the potential risks and benefits of the medical intervention you are pursuing

  • Your plan for stability and support during recovery from the medical intervention you are pursuing

Can I see you for therapy too?

Yes! I offer psychotherapy sessions to support you in navigating preparation and recovery from surgery and other gender transitions. You can let me know during our initial consultation or at a later time if you would like to schedule short-term supportive therapy sessions or more long-term weekly therapy.

GALAP Pledge

The Gender Affirming Letter Access Project is a nationwide network of clinicians who offer letters free of charge. I have taken the GALAP Pledge to provide one free gender affirming care letter each month. Please reach out to see if this is available; preference is given to people of color.

All sessions are currently offered via telehealth.
